The Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division supports responsible
OHV recreation and believes that excessive sound levels are a main cause of
complaints against the sport.
The Division has funded equipment and training for hundreds of OHV law
enforcement officers throughout the state, and these officers perform
complimentary OHV sound level tests when possible. A need for more
citizen involvement in voluntary OHV sound testing has been identified. To
remedy the lack of training and equipment for citizens to provide voluntary
OHV sound level testing, the Division is sponsoring a Volunteer OHV Sound
Level Testing Program.
* The testing kit will include a Type II sound meter, tachometer, tape
measure, storage box and other items necessary to perform the SAE 1287
OHV sound test. This is the test conducted to assist an OHV owner in
meeting the state OHV Noise Standard.
* Term of loan is negotiable.
* A DPR 430A , OHV Sound Level Kit Temporary Loan Record, shall be
completed at the time of the loan to document the process.
* Volunteers will receive an OHV sound testing orientation before using the
OHV Sound Test Kit in the field.
* Volunteers will complete Noise Test Data Cards and mail to Division on a
regular basis to document kit use and assist the Division in collecting
statewide test data.
* Annual sound meter performance evaluations will be paid for by the
Division. These annual evaluations validate accurate test results. Return the
entire sound meter kit to Division for evaluation (OHMVRD HQ, 1725 23rd
Street, Suite 200, Sacramento, CA 95816-7100, Attn: Tom Bernardo).
* For further information on the program or to apply contact Tom Bernardo
at (916) 327-5698 or ">tbern@parks.ca.gov">.
